On the afternoon of May 4, Mr. Nguyen Van Huyen, Director General of Roads, said the unit submitted a plan to repair the steel plates of Thang Long bridge with super-light composite structure. The construction unit plans to rake off the existing asphalt concrete, clean the steel face plate and weld the anchor nails, install the steel mesh and pour a layer of high-strength concrete.
After that, the bridge deck was covered with asphalt concrete to create roughness to ensure smooth operation during exploitation; damaged expansion joints on the deck will be completely replaced.
“The life of the project is expected to be about 10 years”, Mr. Huyen said. It is expected that the repair project cost is 269 billion VND by road maintenance, which is 313 billion VND less than the plan of the Japanese consultant each researched.
Directorate for Roads is preparing bidding procedures in June, commencing in July and completing at the end of this year; The construction process prohibits vehicles from crossing the bridge. Some foreign and domestic experts are hired to oversee the construction process.
According to the leader of the Directorate for Roads, two years ago when the Thang Long bridge was damaged, the Ministry of Transport studied the original technology (from Russia) and invited the executive director of the Thang Long bridge design unit to Vietnam. study the repair plan.
Russian experts have surveyed Thang Long bridge, studied the options and answered not to participate in this project. Therefore, Directorate for Roads does not use Russian technology repair plans but must find other solutions.
After more than 20 years of use, Thang Long bridge has damaged its surface, the adhesion between the asphalt concrete and the waterproofing layer on the steel plate is reduced, causing slip, creating horizontal cracks, oblique cracks, concrete clumping. plastic cardboard on the deck. Although it has been overhauled 2 times and regularly maintained, the deterioration of this bridge still occurs frequently.
Mr. Nguyen Van Huyen added that Thang Long bridge has a complex structure, 2-storey steel truss for roads and railways, a large span length, always subject to a large vehicle load and increasing on the bridge, along with that is the train load … creating deformation vibrations. The bridge deck was dragged in both vertical and horizontal directions, so it damaged over time.
